The City's Municipal Heritage Committee is comprised of two members of Council and a group of ten volunteers with various levels of experience and knowledge in archaeology, heritage conservation and city cultural planning and a passion for conserving the City's rich cultural heritage resources.

Council consults with its Municipal Heritage Committee regarding cultural heritage matters as required either by the Ontario Heritage Act, as specified through the passing of a City bylaw or as set out in the Heritage Committee mandate.

Activities:

• Identification of built heritage resources and updates to the City of Kingston Heritage Properties Register;
• Protection of Heritage Resources through designations, amendments to or requests to repeal all or part of a designation bylaw, and by-laws to establish easements or covenants with owners, and Designation of Heritage Conservation Districts;
• Review and provide recommendations on Heritage Permit applications for protected heritage properties.

The Municipal Heritage Committee also provides input on Planning Applications and development proposals.

Council may also consult with the Heritage Committee regarding cultural heritage planning initiatives, including:

• Establishing policies for incorporating accessibility issues into heritage buildings and structures;
• Developing municipal heritage conservation guidelines and policy,
• Developing municipal heritage incentive programs;
• Developing education programs and resource materials respecting the City's cultural heritage resources; and
• Communicating with City staff, the general public and various heritage organizations to promote Kingston's cultural heritage.

There are three working groups which aid and report to the Heritage Committee: the Historic Properties Research Working Group, the Communications and Education Working Group and the Cultural Heritage Working Group.

Membership for this Committee is a staggered 2 to 4 year term. Your City may need your informed opinion. You may wish to consider applying to sit on this committee if you have qualifications and experience related to heritage conservation techniques, building construction and renovations, heritage building design, historical research, planning, archaeology and knowledge and appreciation of the community's natural, tangible and intangible heritage.
