FAQs

Everything you want to know about the Waaban Crossing!

What's Happening

The Waaban Crossing is open!

Overlapping colours form an arch to represent a bridge. Text reads: Waaban Crossing. Reflect, connect, flow.

Excited about the opening of the bridge? We are too! Please know that the City will be monitoring traffic in areas on both the west and east shores of the Waaban Crossing. We anticipate that it may take a couple of months for ‘normal’ traffic patterns to become established as motorists make adjustments to their travel routes. Our monitoring results will be used to make traffic signal timing adjustments that may be needed to optimize traffic flow. We appreciate your patience as everyone enjoys their first walk, ride or drive across the bridge in the coming days and weeks. Even though it is exciting to see new views of the city and the amazing Cataraqui River, please drive safely!

Notice to boaters: spring/summer 2023

This is a notice advising boaters of the potential for reduced draft adjacent to the pier locations of the Waaban Crossing bridge. Please visit the City of Kingston website for the complete notice. If you have questions, please email us at ThirdCrossing@CityofKingston.ca.

Turbidity curtains: spring 2023

You may have noticed that some of the turbidity curtains remain in the Cataraqui River along the length of the bridge. These curtains were installed at the beginning of the project to create a barrier in the water to keep sediment contained and to minimize disruption to aquatic life during construction.

Given that the bridge was built over a UNESCO Heritage Site, the Rideau Canal, there is a strict removal process in place. We are working with our agency partners to make sure the curtain removal is safe and responsible. The environmental team will also continue monitoring the project site and surrounding area to protect the wildlife habitat and perform any foam clean-up as required.
