Feb. 29, 2024 Update: The YGK Music program is currently under review for possible expansion in the context of the Kingston Music Strategy, which aims to expand visibility and scope of YGK Music to better promote local musicians (i.e., create online artist profiles, partner with local community radio stations, include playlists on other websites and in more public spaces, and offer performance opportunities for featured musicians) and evaluate current selection criteria in terms of diversity goals.

2023 playlists now live

The City of Kingston’s 2023 YGK Music playlists, featuring 30 tracks created by local musicians, are now live for listening on the City website and SoundCloud. Both playlists will be produced for streaming in City facilities and public spaces, including Springer Market Square. Music on Hold will also be featured on the City call waiting system. The two playlists are Kingston Sounds which showcases the strength and diversity of the local music scene and Music on Hold which promotes mostly instrumental music to callers to the City.

About YGK Music

YGK Music was launched in 2019 in partnership with Tourism Kingston as a local music pilot project that showcases and promotes Kingston music and musicians through curated playlists to be made available for listening on the City website and call waiting system, the Visit Kingston music page, and in various City properties. The inaugural YGK Music playlists can be listened to through the City’s SoundCloud:

Music Sector Support

The City, in partnership with Nordicity, is developing a comprehensive and artist-centred Music Strategy to help realize the full benefits of a thriving local music economy.

The City conducted extensive public engagement in February and March 2023, including a survey, open house, one-on-one interviews, and roundtable discussions, to gather resident feedback and ideas. The aim was to inform the direction of the Kingston Music Strategy and learn about the needs of musicians and opportunities involving all aspects of the music sector.
