When can outdoor rinks open?

Please note that all outdoor rinks are closed for the season.

The following are some of the factors that determine when a rink can open.

  • Weather - The City needs a heavy frost-based surface and a series of very cold days to build up the ice on outdoor rinks. The rink at Springer Market Square has a cooling system allowing it to open earlier in the season. No other outdoor rink in the City has such a system.
  • On-site access to water - Some outdoor rinks have access to water on site making it easier to prepare them for skaters. Water has to be trucked to other outdoor rinks, which changes the process for flooding them and making them skate-ready.

COVID-19 Safety Measures

In consultation with KFL&A Public Health, the following COVID-19 safety measures have been implemented at outdoor rinks:

  • Skating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Face coverings are recommended at all times.
  • Skaters should maintain a physical distance of 2 metres (6 ft) both on and off the ice.

Types of Rinks

Kingston is home to several outdoor rinks for community use during the winter months. Rinks are supported by FedDev Ontario, and are classified into three categories.

  • Staffed rinks - These rinks have City staff present from open to close. The City also installs boards, floods at regularly scheduled intervals and maintains the ice surface. At some staffed locations, changerooms and washrooms are available for use. Refer to the map above for details.
  • Unstaffed rinks - These rinks do not have City staff at them throughout the day, but the City installs boards, floods at regularly scheduled intervals and maintains the ice surface.
  • Community rinks - These are rinks on City property, that are managed and run by a group of volunteers. While the City does put up boards at these locations, it is up to the volunteers to maintain them. If you’re interested in building your own community rink please review the Outdoor Rink Policy and follow the instructions in the Outdoor Rink Manual.
Do you have an hour to spare? Neighbourhood volunteers are needed to help shovel and flood the Molly McGlynn ice rink. Registering to help is easy! Register Here
