Red Light Cameras
Red Light Cameras
About the Project
Council directed City staff to begin the process of implementing red light cameras at 10 intersections in Kingston at its meeting on December 3, 2019.
A staff update report on red light cameras was presented to Council for consideration on May 18, 2021, at which time Council directed staff to modify implementation of the red light camera program to an initial seven intersections for operation beginning in 2022, with an option to implement additional intersections through the term of the contract.
Red light cameras have been operating in Ontario for almost 20 years and will be operational at over 300 sites across 14 municipalities at the time of Kingston’s entry in 2022. Red light cameras have been proven to improve the level of safety at intersections for all road users.
The City is planning to install seven red light cameras in fall of 2021 and begin the program in early 2022. Education and further information related to red light cameras will be provided ahead of the program launch.
Get Involved
Prior to the report being presented to council, residents were invited to ask City staff their questions and provide their input about the red light camera program through Get Involved Kingston from Sept. 18 to Oct. 11. Staff received and responded to 50 related questions.
Information Sessions
September 2019
Two in-person sessions were held, beginning with a short presentation from staff followed by a question and answer period.
