About the Project

The City is leading an economic development initiative, “Health Innovation Kingston” (HI YGK), to grow Kingston’s health and healthcare sector. Home to two universities, a college and a tertiary care hospital, Kingston is rapidly developing a data-driven knowledge economy. Our health sector is rich in talent and resources, including health data-focused organizations – Kingston is often referred to as a “living lab” where innovative ideas can be developed and tested in the same environment.

The HI YGK project is a collaboration with seven local partners, all of whom are working together to help new companies grow in Kingston by ensuring that existing health sector companies thrive and by attracting new companies, big and small, to Kingston from elsewhere in Canada and around the world. HI YGK partners leverage technology and expertise to support attraction, retention and growth for companies operating in the health sector.

The HI YGK team consists of:

  • Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC)
  • St. Lawrence College (SLC)
  • Kingston Economic Development
  • Queen’s Centre for Advanced Computing (CAC)
  • Queen’s Partnerships and Innovation (QPI)
  • Dunin-Deshpande Queen’s Innovation Centre (DDQIC)
  • Queen’s Ingenuity Labs
  • City of Kingston

Start a Health Business in the Summer of 2023

Are you interested in turning a health innovation into a startup? The Dunin-Deshpande Queen’s Innovation Centre invites you to apply to the Build2Scale Health Summer Program.

Buil2Scale is for individuals or teams interested in health innovation with a capacity for creativity, a tolerance for risk, and an interest in entrepreneurship or social innovation. Build2Scale helps you to grow your entrepreneurial mindset and skillset while joining a network of diverse, creative, and ambitious peers. If you or your team are looking to create distinctive value or respond to an unmet need in the health or patient care sectors, this program is for you!

Receive training from world-class entrepreneurs and business strategists, mentorship, space to work on your venture, a $10,000 stipend (if working full-time in-person), up to $4,000 seed funding, and the opportunity to compete for larger seed funding prizes in the final pitch competition!

You can participate full-time in person and receive the personal stipend (maximum 3 stipends available per team) or participate part-time virtually with no stipend.

In our program last year, we had a team of Computing students partner with Dr. Fabio Ynoe de Moraes, Queen’s Assistant Professor in Oncology and Full Time Attending Staff Medical at KGH and Hotel Dieu. See a quote about his experience below:

“The Dunin-Deshpande Queen's Innovation Centre provides a unique and unparalleled educational experience for students and faculty, offering not only world-class knowledge but also essential skills in entrepreneurship and innovation. This creates an environment where knowledge is transformed into practical, adaptable solutions that make a positive impact on society.”
