Close the front door for climate action

Retailers in Kingston are making wonderful progress towards a greener future by participating in programs such as Sustainbly.eco, installing energy-efficient lighting, undertaking energy audits and implementing the actions identified in the Climate Leadership Plan.

While I’m thrilled with the consistent progress I’ve seen in the community in recent years, I’m also excited to build on this success by highlighting an initiative that was implemented to help retailers showcase their commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) by making one simple change - closing the front door for climate action.

Some retailers keep doors open on hot days as a way to attract customers, but this can considerably increase energy costs. When the door is open and the air conditioning continues to run, all the cool air makes its way outside, increasing energy use and emissions.

Buildings and their energy systems (heating and cooling) account for a substantial portion of community GHG emissions, and energy conservation and efficiencies contribute directly and significantly to reducing carbon pollution.

Keeping the doors and windows closed keeps all the cool air inside, making the store comfortable for staff and customers, while significantly reducing GHG emissions.

Just ask our expert Facilities Management and Construction Services (FMCS) team! This team manages over 160 municipal facilities across the City and has made impressive progress in reducing energy consumption and GHGs through various initiatives such as installing smart thermostats and building automation systems, upgrading aging cooling systems with more efficient technologies, reducing outside air ventilation during the summer, removing fossil fuel heating equipment and replacing lights with LEDs.

The FMCS team is also actively testing new types of air conditioning that are expected to reduce cooling-related energy use by at least 20%! Stay tuned for more information about this exciting work.

YGK Retailers – take the pledge!

Businesses that leave their doors open while the AC is running lose up to $1,000 every summer. By making one simple change, you will save money and reduce your carbon footprint.

Local businesses and retailers in Kingston are invited to reduce their carbon footprint by pledging to keep doors and windows closed when the AC is running. Participating businesses will receive a free storefront decal to showcase their commitment to climate action
