PROJECT  BACKGROUND

The City is building a community centre to be located at Highway 15 and Grenadier Drive in the City's east end.

In April 2014, council directed staff to review and consult with the community on potential sites for a community centre in the Greenwood Park area of Kingston East so the project could be factored into a comprehensive financial capital plan. At the same time, council asked that the Limestone District School Board be informed that the City was not interested in the acquisition of the J.E. Horton Public School property.

In September 2014, staff presented the community centre site options at a public meeting at the Gore Road Fire Hall.  Public feedback was collected on location and approved by council in March of 2015 for the Highway 15 and Grenadier Drive location.  Further public feedback was received in the Fall of 2016 regarding programs and services as well as facility amenities, which will help shape the design concept for the new facility.

During the 2017 budget process, city council authorized staff to hire a designer and begin the process of developing proposed designs for the east-end community centre. The design for the new community centre was opened to public consultation February-March, 2018. In 2019, a contract for construction was awarded and groundbreaking was held in December.

Construction is currently underway with estimated completion by the end of 2021.
