ABOUT THE PROJECT
The City is working on plans for a community centre to be located at 779 Highway 15, in Kingston's east end. Once completed, it will offer a full-sized gymnasium, fitness centre, community kitchen, multi-purpose rooms, meeting rooms, splash pad, outdoor rink and an emergency reception centre. The $13.5 million, 22,000 sq. ft. community Centre is being built to achieve higher energy efficiencies and substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions – measures that will also offer significant savings on operational costs on an ongoing basis. These include a geothermal heating and cooling system, LED lighting and rooftop solar photovoltaic technology.
Phase 1: Selection of east end community centre site
In September 2014, staff presented the community centre site options at a public meeting at the Gore Road Fire Hall. Public feedback was collected on location and the Highway 15 and Grenadier Drive site for the new community centre was approved by council in March of 2015.
Phase 2: Facility and program design
During the 2016 budget process, City Council authorized staff to hire a designer and begin the process of developing proposed designs for the east-end community centre. The design for the new community centre was completed with public consultation in 2018.
