Student Engagement

With students being such a large part of our Kingston community, engaging a diverse range of students in the Third Crossing project is something the team values. We are involving students across the city in many different ways, from co-op students to interns to having Queens University, St. Lawrence College and RMC students come and learn about the project through internships and workshops. On this page are a series of blog posts written by students across Kingston sharing their thoughts, learning experiences and lessons regarding their involvement in the project

The Start of My Placement at Third Crossing

My name is Luke Crockett, and I am a second-year Advertising and Marketing Communications student at St. Lawrence College. One of the great things about my program is that we have a Co-Op for seven weeks during our second semester that gives us an opportunity to go out and get some real-life work experience. For this Co-op, I decided that I wanted my placement to involve working with the community in Kingston. Now a few months later I am writing this on my second day with the Third Crossing team at the City of Kingston.

This week I had the opportunity to visit the Third Crossing Site. When I arrived on site I went into one of the trailers and met Marc, a field engineer from Kiewit.  Marc knows everything and anything about the project, he gave me an in-depth project overview of what has happened so far and what they are currently working on such as building the rock causeway. We then had a safety meeting.

I was then given a tour of the entire site and introduced to a welder who was cutting into large shipping containers because they will be placed in the water along the rock causeway in order to allow turtles/ aquatic life to swim freely through the river without disruption.  We then walked over to a container that had lifejackets in it, that are required to be worn while walking onto the causeway.  After we had our life jackets on Marc took us out onto the causeway, showing me where the first turtle crossing container is, where the crane will be located and what area of the causeway they are currently working on.

                                                                                           (On the rock causeway)

After the site tour, I am even more excited to be working on this project for the next six weeks. I don’t only get to work on an intriguing community-building infrastructure project but I get to focus on bringing students, like myself, exciting new opportunities. Please follow my journey over the next few weeks as I move forward with working with this project on the City of Kingston's Instagram Twitter and Facebook pages.
