Climate Leadership Plan
Climate Leadership Plan
About the Project
Climate change is a local issue
In Kingston, 100-year floods are becoming more frequent, damaging homes and driving up insurance costs. Flooded roads and pathways force closures and repairs, costing tax dollars. More days of extreme heat and cold impact vulnerable residents, farmers’ crops, and create hospitable environments for ticks and invasive plants.
Preventing the local spread of COVID-19 shows us we can achieve a common goal. That together, we can make a difference. As we continue to respond to the pandemic, together, let’s also make our plan to take climate action! Science has proven that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are a leading cause of climate change. It is within our power to reduce these emissions, but the City can’t do it alone.
We need you!
This community-informed plan will guide our decisions moving forward and lay the foundation that future generations can build on. Learn more about the Climate Leadership Plan (CLP) so that, in the coming months, you can help realize and implement real climate action.
Our targets
How do we get there?
The Climate Leadership Plan will identify climate impacts, risks and vulnerabilities, and provide guidance to City staff on the opportunities for becoming more resilient to climate change. Actions identified to achieve GHG reduction targets will be referred to as Mitigation actions or Adaptation Actions.
Goals of the Climate Leadership Plan
- Define a clear path to reach corporate and community carbon neutrality.
- Engage the most influential local stakeholders who can make the biggest GHG reductions.
- Identify climate adaptation priorities.
- Consider solutions that demonstrate economic development and prosperity.
A history of climate action and a commit moving forward
The Climate Leadership Plan will be informed by work the City has undertaken to date. This includes building on work from the award-winning Climate Action Plan (2014), the Working Group on Climate Action Report (2019), and more.
